York Observatory Evenings

Learn about the history of the observatory and astronomy in York with our volunteers at our open evenings. You’ll be able to…

  • Gaze at the night skies through the historic Cooke telescope
  • Enjoy regular sky tours from the lawns outside the Observatory through binoculars
  • Take a virtual 3D tour of the solar system – make sure to download the Google Cardboard app and Virtual Reality Moon for Google Cardboard on an iPhone or Titans of Space on Android ahead of your visit
  • Walk our planet trail illuminated in the Gardens to find out how far away the sun is
  • Try our crater making activity for young astronomers
  • Handle space rocks in the Astro-tent

Please note that activities are subject to the availability of volunteers. In the event of poor weather, please still come along – everything will still be running and you may see something exciting during a break in the clouds!

The current series of York Observatory evening events has now finished, but we hope to announce our next series shortly.
