Some of the finest images of plant life, gardens and green spaces in the world will go on show in York next month in a new display in York Museum Gardens.

Now in its 12th year, The International Garden Photographer of the Year is the world’s most prestigious photographic competition for this genre, featuring works which celebrate the beauty and importance of the green planet.

Twelve of the winning entries will go on show in the display on the Main Lawn of the Gardens from May 9 until August 7.

Alison Pringle, Gardens Manager for York Museums Trust, said:

“We are delighted to be bringing this wonderful collection of photographs to York. They are stunning to see and demonstrate the diversity of the planet’s green spaces in the most beautiful way. We’re sure they will prove to be a popular addition to the York Museum Gardens, which is itself a lovely green space to explore in the heart of the city.”

Curtis McGlinchey, IGPOTY Manager said:

“Competition 11 has been a tremendous year for garden photography as we continue to push the genre and broaden public understanding and awareness of plant life in its many diverse forms. We’re thrilled to be sharing these inspiring images through York Museums Trust, working together to champion the value of culture, art and nature.”

Competition 11 had 19,000 entries from more than 50 countries. The exhibition in York will show the best of these on 12 x 1.8 x 1.8m panels displayed in the Gardens. This will include the overall winning image, Cerrado Sunrise, by Marcio Cabral. This was taken in Brazil and depicts beautiful flowers of Paepalanthus chiquitensis, stretching out on countless filaments towards the first light of the rising sun.

The exhibition in York is free and part of an international tour including Germany, Gibraltar, Portugal and The Netherlands.
